City of Edinburgh Council is going to consult on its next Local Development Plan, called City Plan 2030 this year. This plan will determine what new houses are built in our area.
I received a lot of replies to my article about Cala Homes’ plans to build 1,000 new units on the farmland between Juniper Green, Currie, Balerno and the railway line.
These plans, together with recently rejected applications to develop housing next to Glenbrook Road and to Heriot Watt University, show that Pentland Hills is an attractive proposition for developers.
We must ensure our voice is heard when future developments are considered as part of the City Plan, so that our farmland and green belt are protected, and if some building is unavoidable, it is only allowed when the Council provides enough local transport, GPs, and school places, and when the developer pays for substantial and long term improvements through their planning obligations.
I’d love to hear your ideas about what those obligations should be, whether it’s better parking at Curriehill Station / Pentland View / Bavelaw Road car parks, more pedestrian crossings near bus stops on Lanark Road, improvements to the Water of Leith path surface and lighting, improvements to facilities at our schools and community centres, or better paths to directly access the hills.
